I've put a new 680cca battery in, no crank just a click. So after some looking and trying to figure out how to get to the starter, i thought the easiest way would be to take the manifolds off. Ive taken all the manifold nuts off again, and then loosened two of the three nuts where the the turbo bolts to the manifold but there is one behind near the firewall underneath the manifold which i cannot get hold of. I disconnected the flange where exhaust meets the turbo so the whole manifold moves. How do I get to the turbo off so i can access the starter??

Anyone have experience with getting the starter out of one of these? Its got me stumped.
I did it a few weeks ago.
You work from underneath.
1/ oil filter canister off.
2/turbo drain line off.
loosen nut on middle of engine mount.
3/ control arm remove.
4/ remove heat shields from down pipe & starter.
5/ remove suspension mount.
6/undo engine mount frame bolts from main rail & off engine. Need to support engine to do this.
7/remove bracket on back of starter
8/undo main starter lead & solenoid plug.
9/undo 3 starter flange bolts.
It will then nearly fall out on the floor !!

i have done 3 starters and not once have i had to remove the control arm, engine mount or anything other then the starter motor bolts. (it also appears mine is missing the heat sheild might have to track one down)
one of them was on a stock height diesel XJ, it is a little fiddly but it saves all that extra work

Ok I currently haven't removed the turbo, that rear nut is impossible! I won't progress any further. Btw i have not removed the heat shield yet.. I've only been working from above. After lots of procrastination looking at it after work, all I've really done is loosen an exhaust clamp and two nuts on the turbo.

Please post how you do it. My way was nearly identical with the manual.
