I have a friend with a convertible who runs a Mongoose alarm (with microwave sensors) and it seems to work fine.....I had one of their alarms on my show car Pontiac as well....never any issues.
No experience with alarms on Jeeps, though...sorry.

How do they work? If someone breaks in the microwave runs for 2 minutes and the Thieves are cooked?

Leave the fobs alone and they'll probably stop trying to break in!

I've spent 40 odd years installing alarm systems in buildings and I am of the opinion they are a PITA. If I had anything worth pinching I would put a system like Bif had in 'Back To The Future' where you have to press a concealed button to start it. The button could be spliced into the wire to the starter solenoid. Or you could get real fancy and wire it so if anyone tries to start it without pressing the button it blows a fuse to the fuel pump. This method guards against someone stealing your keys and driving away.

IMHO, the chance of idjuts slashing the soft-top, looking for loot, is too high in a dodgy area.

In all my time in the insurance claims industry, I learnt quickly that thieves don't like taking risks and they love "low hanging fruit". If your car is the easiest to steal or steal from then there aren't many (if any) deterrents that will work.

An alarm doesn't help much for break-ins but it makes a car more difficult and time consuming to steal, time that comes with a big risk to thieves.

BTW nowadays all cars use transponder keys so almost 3/4 of all cars are stolen using their own keys, usually burgled from the house, nullifying the usefulness of any alarm.
