So, do you actually own an unlimited or rubicon that you have towed a heavy load with?

I am looking for opinions and value them immensely in a decision making process.
So far the only one worth taking on board is dhard's.

It is easy put up with mediocre performance whilst towing if that is the worst of it, but I want to know how they tow.
Do they feel safe?
Do they struggle under braking?
Has anyone towed something near the limits of the rated capacity?

I can also get more torque and power through modifications if thats the only issue.

In answer too your questions with aftermarket suspension(stock springs aren't really upto itlong term) they tow just fine stability wise and braking is good as they have good brakes and if you are happy too live with the fact that the performance is a little lacking the offroad abillity more than compensates. At least that's how i feel, i have towed upto 1500kg and apart from initial takeoff and making sure you prepare well for hills i can't say i have been too dissapointed. With a good dual axle trailer with electric brakes apart from being a bit slow and thirsty you'll probably not even notice it's there. Auto with an extra cooler in would probably be my pick too.

I've used my 2 door to tow the boat down south @ 500km trip, weighed in about 1500kg, always worked ok: just getting the gears right for uphill stretches, it’s not as good as the cruiser used to be, but that had about 30kw more power ... also cost $20k more ...

If heaps of towing to be done you must replace the springs and shocks and the electric brakes would be a most helpful.

I've towed a TJ around on the back of a trailer from the Goldie to Brisbane... Not something I would want to do again unless I have to...

Short wheelbase JK though ??
The extra length and base weight of the four door should make towing a lot better.
