Changed the thermostat.
Engine was running too cold at 65°C, thermostat was opening to early.
Sits now at 83°C, no matter of internal heater on or off.

Indicator sits now two markings above the
40°C line, just a tiny bit above the marking itself.
The cluster instrument has not the ultra correct readings, as the sensor can have differences too.
Since I have 2 TD's I can cross check- both are running slight a bit over 80°C. So I assume this is the correct running temperature at normal load.

It's almost like you heard my thoughts today Deezelweazel, I bypassed my heater due to leaking core and was wondering where the gauge usually sits as I haven't taken mine on a good drive yet. Now I have something to compare with.

I'm sorry to hear that, I had to exchange the heater also in the past.
Will never, ever do that again! Seriously!

Down here on cold winter mornings mine struggles to get past the second mark. I suspect its getting too much very cold air from the snorkel & the heater is big enough to more than cool the engine. In the warmer weather it runs just above the 3rd mark which is about where the thermostat opens.

Just an update on the other one, havent got it started yet, wont start on the battery, will need to tow start. I am beginning to think the #1 lifters may be faulty as the valves dont appear to fully close. If that turns out to be the case the head will need to come off again.
Been a bit busy working on my pop top camper.

Seeing the muck in your cooling system, I would be flushing it with tap water until its clean, running it till the water goes muddy & flushing again. I had to do that a few times with a diesel I purchased years ago that had not had coolant in it for a very long time.

Yeah luckily it's summer now, I won't be rushing into it.

Thanks LB. I'm pretty sure mine was 2nd mark above the 40. Would it have been so hard for them to go up in even 20 degree increments
Glad to hear your making progress with other one. I'm sure you'll work out the problem. That brings me to another thought I had today, are the rockers adjustable or hydraulic lifters?

Finished fitting the new trans cooler, radiator and thermo fan. 12" davies craig unit doesn't do too badly, but the real test will be tomorrow off-road. Have also serviced the auto again as the fluid was a reddish brown. Hopefully it stays fairly clean from now on.
