With the family of 4 on board & luggage for 2 weeks, 2" lift & bull bar I was getting 8.8 to 9l/at 110km on the Hume with a set of 245/75/17 Silent Armor G/Y's.

This setup

They look pretty good. Was considering GY A/T as well. I've had the DuraTrac and were awesome. I have GY EfficientGripSUV at present on the front and grip much more than the Cooper ATR. The ATR are terrible on wet bitumen. Awesome bullbar as well. Looks good. Neat setup.

I prefer the thinner profile once aired down. Less drag and better on fuel. Yes I agree compared to wider tyres, have more lateral movement which some people dislike. I might try the 245/75/17 out I think. Something totally new to me. Mate has 265/70/17 on his Prado and look good. But complains of much increased fuel usage. His factories are 265/65/17.
It could be an issue if you towed, as the gearing on the Merc gearbox, lends itself to towing.

However if you aren't towing, the taller gearing should help the diesels fuel economy, by lowering the revs.

This is mainly due, to the Merc gearbox being designed ,for high output petrol engines.

The diesel produces heaps of grunt around 1800RPM, whereas the gearbox/tyre combination, has the Jeep running at about 2200RPM.

Like I said, great for towing, but doesn't help unloaded cruising economy.IMO

On my recent road trip to the NT with my van in tow I found that the sweet spot where the engine temp & transmission temp stayed coolest with 265/70/17 tyres was 110kph in 5th & RPM at 2200. Dropping back to 100kph saw my transmission wanting to jump between 4th & 5th. Temps raised from 85 to over 100 (engine temp spiked as well) & it made no difference if I locked the trans in 4th, the temps still went up.

So 2200rpm is the preferred rev range for this engine/transmission combo.

The most I plan to tow is a box trailer with "upto a Tonne", but only short distances (home to Hardware stores etc). But in general, my box trailer with some trash in it, so maybe 400kg.

General cruising, for economy, would be good to lower the revs a little. I get the best economy travelling at 80kph where the revs are 1800rpm. My LC TDV8 was geared the same. Once I put 33's on my economy increased as revs were lowered.

Hi, I changed up to 255/65R17 and had no issues with the bolt. It's a good compromise if you are not sure and a few options out there even in LT if you need them.

Sent from my HTC_PN071 using Aussie Jeep Offroad mobile app

Fuel figures

At 110 on the Hay Plains I got 17L BUT that was the best at that speed. Worse figures between Coober Pedy & Alice 19.8L
