I will argue against that, my Cherokee takes 2-3 times the abuse that my mates in their trolls (remarkably better than bruisers) and bruisers take and she just wants more, I (known to them as captain dodgy) have gone trail fixes to things they rendered impossible, the nissotas are great cars in the right place, treat them right, keep them clean, you can spend $10,000 on top of half a house payment to make them as capable as a stock jeep, and don't go off road and you will get half a million clicks pretty easy, but out in the bush it's our territory, if you want resale value, buy an investment property... If you want a 4x4, buy a Jeep...

i dont deny that jeeps are a lot more capable offroad than nissans and toyotas but they BREAK DOWN!!! I'd rather a car that starts every time and when it doesnt start you dont need to spend weeks looking for parts (try finding an engine mount for a diesel xj or sort out a faulty fuel gauge). Hence bad resale value
Thats my whole point

You do have some good points, the jeep can really throw good curve balls at you I think it's more the constant flow of pissy stuff needing doing, (sensors, electrical surprises etc) but the bigger stuff such as motor, box and suspension Is where you break your nissota (when you get around to it) my jeep has never been undrivable (my lux did that twice) that's why I think she's so tough, and like hunno said, it's more the attitude

I think the key word there is diesel....
Mine rarely gives me any dramas which I find really good considering it is 17yrs old.
Toyotas and Nissans break down too and aren't as easy to get parts for as some like to suggest, the old ones were easy but the newer ones aren't so much.
A bush mechanic isn't going to be able to do too much to anything with EFI so from the 80 series onwards is in the same boat as us and don't for a minute think that different parts on different year models is a Jeep thing, ask any 'cruiser owner from the 80 series onwards about year model variations, if he is honest he will tell you that they are all different and the parts out west aren't there for a lot of it...

Hands down the jeep is the easiest to modify and with the best results. We have at least five xjs in the sjc and each one is modified differently with parts easily bought off the shelf. You can't say that about the ricers. I was behind a hi lux the other day with spacer home made at least four inches high, the thing looked as if it were going to flip over any second, god help him going through s bends. It looked as if it drove like crap. My xj drives like stock and has a 6 inch lift. Sure I spent a fortune modifying it and getting it engineered but it works. And the thing is so easy to work on, much easier then my yota van, I just hand that to the mechanic. If you get some good tools and a mate, you can do most jobs. Get a FSM and give it a go, but yes Anthony I feel your pain.

Maybe in a decade or so some will realize that if they try & use their jeep, or any 4WD for that matter, as a sledge hammer against hard ground it will break !
They are not boats either.
If you want something stronger get a Unimog & be prepared for a slow trip.
The diesel XJ is fine in the hands of a seasoned diesel driver. Its not for the boy racers of the world. If you dont like your jeep then sell it!! Move on & get a ricer & you can then complain on their forums !!
