i chose a jeep because it presented best value for money, and because no other car that is as capable in factory form as the cherokee i beleive, that comes with the fuel consumption of a petrol 4-cylinder. the v6 i have heard is known for guzzling, and the only other 4-cylinder petrol engines in suvs are honda crvs, toyota rav 4s and various suzukis - not exactly what i was looking for.

the knew landcruiser comes in at 100 grand i heard, and if you had theat much cash and was serious about off-roading, why not just buy a gran cherokee and put serious off-road gear on it for example.

patrols might have good reliability and could be quite capable off-road, but they are quite massive, and are the only great nissan's for proper off-roading i hear.

besides, jeep has the best badge, and are way cooler than the rest.

I've owned 4 jeeps - my last 4 cars

KJ - limited bought as a family car in 2003 - off roading very mild unfortunately rolled it ont the way home from jambo oct 04 - really loved the kj
WG - laredo - did alot more offroading but paid for it in the workshop - lots of diff issues
The WG was bought due to the v8 and mid size - was by far the best cruiser - on the open road was a fab car and extremely smooth and comfy to drive
TJ - 05 6spd - love the size SWB, softtop.hardtop and the fact it looks like it drives (like a tractor) and is amazing off road and can take it up or down any track with confidence
if you mod them well they won't let you down - service them every six months and check everything before and after offroading including cleaning the tj is great very reliable

Patriot crd - replaced the grand - this little beast is our family car for the bitumen - love it very comfy - fits our family of 3 and dog and 7l per 100k is great got all the comfy stuff

why I haven't considered other brands - cost and character

looked seriously at prado when bought the grand but the cost difference couldn't justify
looked at heaps of cars when I bought the patriot - was the only decent AWD with crd on the market 12 months ago was compass and patriot - patriot won due to jeep looks

PS japanese whale and I wouldn't buy one till they stop
landrovers too expensive
only other option is Jeep

the jap stuff is too expensive too buy (maybe cheaper too service)
