Before you do anything major, try squirting a small amount of water onto the alternator pulley while the engine is running. It may be just a bit of fine mud has adhered to the pulley and the water will change the tone of the squeak. If that fails you may be able to get an exchange alternator from an auto elec shop.

As with all things manmade, if someone can make it, usually someone can fix it. Bearings are very cheap, the labour cost determines the economics of the exercise. May be an easy job, may be difficult. Depends on the alternator design. Would definitely be giving it a go if it was my alternator. Have even successfully replaced bearings in moulded plastic idlers.

After contemplating billnicks advice, i decided to try wd40, turned out to be the back bearing. After a squirt it went quite and has remained quite thusfar, fingers crossed it was just a bit of dust.
Back bearing is easiest to replace.
Normally would recommend doing both & brushes. With the belt off you can feel how gravely the bearings are. if the WD40 is doing the job you may be able to get some spray lube into it. My biggest concern is that the back bearing may be seized & its running in the housing. if this is the case, change over alt is only solution.
