Default CRD alternator noise

Can anyone help with information on a noisy CRD alternator pulley? Diesel KJ's have a clutch fitted to the alternator pulley - I'm told to allow the alternator to spin down after the motor is switched off. Mine started rattling at 105,000 Km.(purchase date of vehicle 2004). Rubber dust coming out of the pulley at the front. I'm told there are no replacements available and I can't track down alternatives - the dealer says the whole (perfectly ok) alternator will have to be replaced at a cost of almost $1000. Not happy.
I'd greatly appreciate any advice or options. Thanks.

Apparently it can be replaced. I had a squeak from alternator pulley, the guys from Lost had plenty to say about replacing it. TonyCRD I believe was one of them.

Apparently the pulley by itself isn't cheap.

Good Luck

The alternator has a decoupling pulley to smooth the drive to it. If the pulley is not working it stuffs the alternator bearings. Mine is a early 03 2.8 the pulley was not a seperate servicible item. I can tell you it was not a cheap fix. If you have the servicable decoupler pulley there are two types from my reading and you need a special tool to remove it.

Thanks for the help guys. I clearly need to look at the whole thing more closely before I throw money at it.
The links to LOST were especially informative - nice to know other people have the same problems. I'm going to have a thorough look over them before I make any decision. Normo.
