I didn't have the nerve to ask the people we bought the house from what the mirror was for. When I'm not restoring Jeeps a boat parks there so I never have to see it.

Thanks for the links Tassie, POR15 was the system that had narrowed it do to. I've read a few stories about restorations using it.

I had same issue with s/stabiliser on my 78 cj7 short track.I wound up relocating outside end to underneath chassis on custom mount , allowed s/s to be moved away from diff. Only way I could see itd fit fit as stock would be exceptionally short s/s.I suspect this was a standard problem on narrow track RHD CJ7's.

Last night I removed all the steering linkages and had a play with reversing tie rods. The problem I will have is there will be a clash with the sway bar links when the steering is turned all the way and the springs are extended (remember I have no weight on the springs at the moment). I would have to redesign the sway bar. I was looking at the stabilizer and it's only the end of the bolt on the shock that's grazing the diff cover (it sticks out about 2"). A new s/s may not have the same length of bolt. If it did I could modify the end of it (4" cutting wheel).

Default Update

I've got the YJ donor home and had a good look at it. I was debating using the YJ frame and axles for the buildup but have decided to keep it CJ. The frame is 4" wider and the CJ front clip would not look good on it. It was too much of a departure from the CJ as well. So the decision was to part out the YJ. There are lots of little bits that I can pilfer. Things like the windscreen frame. The CJ one has a bit of cancer and I was not looking forward to fixing it. The YJ one is almost the same and rust free (just have to get rid of 10 layers of clear coat).

I've got the reverse shackles cut off now. I started grinder sanding the frame but soon realized I was kidding myself and decided to see if I can get it sandblsted. Still waiting for new OME YJ springs and shackles to arrive, on back-order.

It's been a while but I'm getting going again. The frame is back from sandblaster and it's all ready to paint. I got all the bits hung to paint and I think I may have to rethink the POR15 on the frame bits. At $100/liter and 4 coats of paint I may be better off getting the bits powdercoated. Will need to make some calls. The frame looks to be in brand new condition. Something to be said for buying vehicles in WA, nothing seems to rust.

I've got the axles back from the rebuilder so they're ready to go back on. Just need to get new rotors for the front and new pads all the way around then I can re-install the front axles.
