Just a thought what colour is the transmision fluid? Has it changed colour from red to brown? could your transmision have seized when it was running hot, to cause what would appear to be a siezed engine? If there is no computer fault, it could all be transmision related.

I have been following the threads in the JGC and Commander forums for a while, and although I have seen some problems associated with the V8 engines, they appear to be less of a worry than the diesel engined counterparts, particularly in an outa warranty situation.

Has there been a time where you as a diesel Commander owner have thought you made the wrong choice in engine? Has the fuel efficiency factor of the diesel engine been overtaken by the fear of having your engine seize up out of warranty? I read about it even in the forums of other makes... it is not unique to Jeep.

Seldom do I read anything cheap and nasty about the 4.7L V8 or even the 5.7L Hemi.

Hands up if you think you shoulda gone V8....

Not me, love diesels the low down grunt is magic. There is nothing quite like a diesel bogging down and grunting out.
With a petrol it is all about reving the crap and spinning the wheels, completely different buzz. Not to say one is right and one is wrong, just different.

I dunno but I hardly ever read engine related failures with diesels on any of the forums I've been in over the years. The odd issue from bad fuel or water ingestion but not mysterious seizures etc. On the other hand I've seen a good bit of discussion on warped heads on the 4.7's. New common rail diesels are of course more susceptable to fuel issues than older diesels but I wouldn't say they have more electronic issues than comparible petrols.

To me that engine does sound excessively rattly but I don't have a 3.0l. Is that normal for a 3.0l. My 2.7l Grand and my old 1HD-FTE cruiser were not that rattly. Did it maybe sieze when hot and now it's sat and cooled it has freed up. If that sound is as bad in person as it sounds on video I'd be concerned it could still be intenal eg big/little/main bearing etc. The temp thing is good idea. What about disconnecting an injector and seeing if it runs differently, like disconnecting a spark plug. Not sure if that would throw faults in modern engine though. Compression and leak down tests. Unfortunately I don't think there is an easy way to find out. Drop the sump and have a look.

Good luck.

130,000 on the Commander and I've given my beast hell and the only issues have been a fault Merc oil sensor that wept oil when new at 10,000km. then 3 faulty glow plugs after 110,000km. Oh yeh and a buggered fan belt idler pulley.

600nm of torque, (chipped) and I average about 12 LP/100 around town and below 10 LP/100 on the highway runs, beat that with a petrol!

Same, I had only one drama that turned out to be electrical, although be it a big one. These engines are like having a petrol v8 but with diesel economy.
We live in the country & get 9.8lt/100, even when it was playing up, & it doesn't rise much when towing. All we need now is convince the government that diesel is not only used by heavy industry & drop their pricing.
