Default XJ Diesel: Alternator (W & W/out oil pump???)

Hi All,

Due to general stupidity I can't recall which alternator came from which motor as I had both my motors sitting out for a while. Both motors were built same month/year, however the alternators appear to be very different! One of them seems to have an oil pump. Any ideas what this would be for? Why would only one of them have an oil pump? Rather confused now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Will.

The pump on the alternator appears to be the vacuum pump, not an oil pump.
I've seen versions with and without the pump but none built in the same year / month.
Accessory belt routing is the same on both engines ?

Simple to solve.
Look for a metal hose that comes up from the lower right side of the engine behind the belt and goes up straightly to the IP. This is the engine with the internal vaccum pump.
The vaccum pump itself is located in front of the A/C compressor.
Keep the alternator with the vaccum pump- it is worth its weight in gold. very expensive and there might be someone needing it.

hey all, sure enough after a quick look i worked out which alternator belonged to which motor. it looks like the bracket that the alternator mounts to is slightly different between them also (to allow for the extra spacing caused by having the vacuum pump attached). thanks guys! Looks like the one with the pump is now the spare.

On a engine that has an internal vacuum pump, could you mod this second vacuum pump on the alternator to be a continuous on board air system?
