A gearbox oil cooler in an Aust AW4 XJ ... is a nescessity.

Either the barely adequate one, as supplied by the factory ... or ....

A better one to suit your driving requirements.

For your problem ... grab yourself some AW4 servicing info from this page --> http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech.html

Make sure oil is fresh, and all adjustments are to spec ... then if the problem persists - start on the electrical controls and components.

Put your actions and findings in your thread and others with AW4 knowledge will guide you further/share similiar issues.

If you decide on a new cooler arrangement ... look to here and the linked threads in post # 7 ( http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...58&postcount=7 ) ...as a guide/info ... and then show us what you've done.

There are other cooler info posts out there as well.
thanks champion, i will have a ganda in a couple.

That was my other option for my xj sticking in first......!
That was absolutely not what I was suggesting, I am firmly of the opinion that an aux trans cooler is essential when towing or wheeling.
I was commenting on the radiator for engine cooling....

I really don't understand most of you.
You all know that you have difficulties with your transmission temperatures.

Instead of getting a solid solution most of you buy those cheap a.. tranny coolers around 50 to 90 bucks, throw that thing in front of your radiator and hope for the very best.
As soon as you recognize that it won't help as you intended you start to whine at the bad,bad jeep engineers.

You have to bite your teeth together and start the next try.
A good cooler unit made from Derale, Perma-cool or Flex-a-lite runs you 200 or 250US-$.
This is not the ultimate.
There are Setrab or Aeroquip units available for 3 to 4 times the price and even small sized they transfer heat very effecitive.
I use a Setrab unit for around 500€ - excluding the fan!

What you pay is what you get!
Get a bar and plate type cooler- not a copper snake winding itself through several layers of cheap and flimsy sheet metal.
Decreasing oil pressure dangerously low!
Your cooling chain is only as strong as the weakest chain link. In this case the radiator itself and the location.

Instead of working on Jeep basics problems you must have those big tires- which put an additional load on the tranny.
Folks, whats wrong with you?

I'm sorry for this not really serious rant- but I think you don't see the reality.
Stop complaining and start to work on your Jeeps as you prepare for the mud. You need a reliable DD to get to the mud -before you can hit the mud.

I've just ordered a b&m 70268 cooler from the states off ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=220616332072). Obviously haven't received it yet so have no personal experience. Do a google search and you'll find a fair few people have installed these into xj's (even write ups around)...
