Only just come back yesterday from that region. The roads do have quite a bit of loose stones on them. we found the birdsville track the best, but slow down for the grids. The missus got us airbourne on one. Going a little slower puts less stress on you and the car. And when passing other vechiles slow down too. The likleyhood of haaving a stone go into the screen isn't too high but it will ruin the trip if it does. I sat on around 85 and she sat on about 95. The Strez was in worse condition with mixed surfaces. Make sure you drop your tyres down accordingly, 30-33 psi worked for us. The heat (not july) will increase your pressures variably.
As said it's not a race and enjoy all the nothing you will see.

A bunch of us were up that part of the country mid July just gone. Across the Simpson bla, bla , bla. The roads where starting to get a bit loose and I would imaging even looser now being after the Birdsville races. Sure you can hit 100kph even exceed that if you wish, I’ve seen to many vehicles wheels pointing up, distressed occupants, insurance dramas, getting yourself home etc etc. all due to excessive speed on dirt roads. You’ve just got to roll with the country and drive to the conditions usually 80-90kph is ok but things can pop up pretty quick and if it rains, well that’s another story. The distances are big, the driving is straight forward . It’s the remoteness that will bite ya if something goes ugly. The legs your talking about a quite achievable but don’t take a rule book and make it imperative that the evening camp has to be at a specific spot.
