Default Shimmy Shimmy

Goddam it

I have had new shocks fitted had my panhard bushes replaced, installed AEV drop box's, had my LHS wheel bearing assembly replaced, installed a new twin steering damper, had my tyres balanced and i'm still getting a shimmy at 80/90kph.

I had the steering /suspension looked at by 2 experts including a Jeep shop and still I'm experiencing the vibe.

I've had the tyres "285x70/17 all terrains" balanced over a dozen times.

Who is the definitive expert on this issue in Perth.

Hey again Gus. I had the same thing after my teraflexx 2.5 lift and really wasn't happy.

An HD Trac bar helped but I could still feel that it wanted to let go and wobble beyond 85kmh.

I then put on castor correction brackets and 99% of the shimmy went away.

A final new set of 275/70r17 tyres with a balance got rod of everything.

4wd USA in Bayswater helped me with the castor correction.

I haven't needed to try it, but i have heard that adjusting alignment for a slight 'toe-out' can help a lot

What do you mean by a "Shimmy Shimmy and a vibe?

Do you mean a harmonic vibration that eg. a vibration that pulses and is not constant?

Have you done a basic check of the ball joints on both the Tie Rod end ball joints and on the Drag Link ball joints. The Drag Link is the rod that connects the steering box arm to the L/H steering knuckle. There's a simple way to test . You need two people. Parking the car on a leave flat paved surface, have the car running in PARK or Neutral with the hand brake on and rear wheels chocked with BIG bricks or similar front and rear so you don't get run over. Now climb under the front end then get your friend to wiggle the wheel left to right, while this is happening place you finger on either tie rod end where it meets the steering knuckle. See if you can feel any movement or clicking, do this for each joint. Sometimes a worn L/H joint will feel like it's coming from the R/H side but when you move to the R/H side to test you'll notice it will be louder or a sharper feel.

There's also an issue with grabbing front brake calipers causing vibrations or bent rear axles or flanges. Do you have any annoying small squeaks when lightly braking?

A vibe or shimmy at speed will be drive shaft angles causing bind. If it is set off by bump in road then it's the normal checks

With the tyres: I also have had vibrations that no balancing can get rid of. The balance is fine, but the tyres aren't perfectly round any more. (And 2 of my rims are slightly off.) When they ran it on the balancer a couple of weeks ago, they showed my the rim wobble and I had previously seen the tyre irregularity. On the plus side, I have some spare rims from when I got a set of OEMs cheap here to use for my trailer.

Thanks all for your tips.
I'm setting up my go pro to video what's going on down there.
I think it's my tyres, however the exercise will be worth it to prove the problem.
