Default Transfer Case - 247 - 242HD Swap

Hi there,

Looks like I am having troubles with my NV247 TC in my WJ 04.

One option maybe to replace it with the 242HD as per the tutorial at:

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/z...ml#post4709394

Maybe a better option than a 247 rebuild or replace...

Has anyone done this swap? Be interesting to hear your thoughts on the difference it makes.

Would still need to find one though .....

Cheers
Chumby

Hi Chumby,
Been looking at doing this for a while. You can use a late XJ 242 (post 9 which bolts up using the 247 input, but not sure about the original WJ cable which I would prefer to use so as not to cut a hole in the floor. I've got a spare rebuilt 247 if you want to stick with that.

Hey Burnz,

Thanks for that mate... I have taken the car into the mechanic today... so if I can tell for sure what the noise is all about.

I called around a few of the wreckers yesterday... it appears the CRD NV247 is different to the v8 models somehow... perhaps connects to the trans differently?

Cheers
Chumby

I put a 242 in mine last year. Bought it for $50 in the States and had it shipped to Tom Woods in Utah who rebuilt it and put his SYE in it. Then had it picked up from him and shipped here. Had the drive shaft done by Spicer in Liverpool with a four hour turnaraound as we needed the HEEP to be done quickly.
No problems...

Did your original cable hook right up? What did you do about the indicators next to the shifter - ie full time 4wd, part time etc? I'm pretty serious about doing this conversion and am keen to get it looking and working just right. I like the idea of the SYE, sounds like you've done a great job.

Stylish tape will mark the pattern. Found a guy here who'll print me a respectable replacement one but I haven't really bothered.
Cable did hook up. You might have to tweak the shift mechanism like shown in the 231 swaps all over the web to get 2WD to shift just right but that's just a simple cut, bend and reweld of the stock one...

Did you find out anymore info on this? My 247 now has now no 4wd in reverse except in low range, I contacted a wreckers this week and he said all 02-03 wj's in Oz come with the 247 none with the 242Hd, I would like to do the 242 swap cause I removed my front shaft for a week to see what differance it would make to fuel ecconomy and the way it drives and found that having a 2 wheel drive option would be good. Would love to find one here instead of dealing with the issues of getting one from the states.
Any info would be great.
Mark
