Default CRD Timing Belt

As we know there has always been a discrepancy between the 100,000km timing belt replacement required in the Australian handbooks and the 100,000 miles in the US handbooks. I had my 90,000 service done yesterday and asked Craig (service manager at Albion) for the labour cost of replacing the timing belt as it would need to be done next service. He told me that he was sure that Jeep had updated the recommendation, and he checked that Jeep had issued a service bulletin to dealers upgrading the timing belt replacement interval to 160,000km (or 100,000 miles).

Not of course that Chrysler will accept any responsibility if it breaks before that!!

Secondary comment: George of The VM Diesel Specialist in the UK suggests that you replace the water pump at the same time as you replace the timing belt, since you have to remove the front cover to remove the water pump and you'll have it off anyway when doing the timing belt. Water pump is GBP148.82 from George or megabucks from Jeep Australia!

Pipes, thanks for that update on the belt situation. Was there any discussion of the time interval on the timing belt change. I believe the amount of time the belt has spent in the engine environment is as important as the distance travelled. For example, if its 160,000kms or five years (as opposed to the previous 100,000kms or five years) then the time interval is still going to get many before they get to the distance.

In most cases its that 5Yr bit that has been the issue with breakages, the belts become cracked and brittle and break.

Im glad that this has come up as mine is nearing the dreaded 100000 and the 5yr mark, good to know about the water pump too, however what is the cost of a timing belt, we have the water pump price, and should this get serviced by the stealership or your trusted mechanic?

I have somewhere a list of things that get serviced in the 100k mark like pcv's, pcm's, filters, fluids, fuel pump, sprockets, cogs, seals etc.....

Does it really need to do the whole shebang or just replace the parts needed?? As my filters and fluids regularly get changed and replaced

Last I heard was someone getting charged near $2000 and without a car for 2 days from the dealers...

Does anyone know of someone who supplies the kits ie pullys and tensioners and belts for 3.7 v6?

The V6 has a timing chain Jeepers, different animal, does not need to be changed like the belt in the CRD. Neither does the water pump in the V6, all these things we are talking about are the CRD, the petrol is a good strong motor, just at the 100k service they do all fluids. You could sit down and work out which you do yourself, and which you wont. If a serpintine belt in the V6 goes you wont do any actual engine damage, you may overheat if you keep driving with no waterpump, but you would also get an engine light because the altenator would not be going, and the steering would become very heavy due to no powersteering pump. The one that the dealer would have to do is the brake fluid change, as they must used their scantool to cycle the ABS system to bleed the brakes. My 100k service on my old V6 was 980.00 from memory and it only took a day.

No-one in their right mind would buy these parts from Jeep Australia, and any competent mechanic should be able to fit them. Print out and give him the relevant pages from the service manual, just in case.

The VM Diesel Specialist thinks that, in the UK, it used to be 100,000 miles but has now been reduced to 70,000 miles (112,000 km). So who knows? I will try to check with Jeep Australia what the official position is.
