Default GPS Software that's good offroad ?

Having just upgraded to a larger "generic" Windows CE based nav system, i've decided that the IGO Primo software is good on the road ( actually very good ) but USELESS off road to the point of actively getting me lost ( not hard i'll admit. )

I also run Oziexplorer which is great but serves a different purpose.
My old GPS had Navtec maps and was surprisingly good on the tracks so obviously possible with the "right" software/maps

So..... what NON HARDWARE specific navigation systems are people running that is good on the tracks as well ?

Whilst i'm interested ( in a general sense ) in locked hardware ( Garmins etc ), I'm really after software that runs on generic CE hardware.

I'm running a TwoNav Aventura and their CompGPS Land software on the PC and loving it.

It depends on what you want to run, and how tech literate you are. If you have asked this question, i assume that this is your first time setting up an off road GPS.

I've had everything from a Laptop with Ozi on it, to HEMA navigator to the VMS gps products. They each have their own pro & cons. My advise would be to stay away from Ozi. It's popular due to that you can get "free" maps with your mates which is not really legal but it has the WORST user interface ever. You'll also spend hours been frustrated with it.

Recently, I bought the VMS app for my iPad and a ram mount from GPSOZ. It's by far the easiest to use and impressive software i have used. The iPad is also unbeatable due to the size of the screen. I highly recommend exploring this option. The cool thing is that you can also use the iPad for email, internet and so many other things so it's well worth the investment.

Which Australian maps are you using. What format does it take?

Fugawi make a CE verion although I have only used the pc version. Gmapcatcher is very good but not sure it runs on ce as I use it on a netbook. I also run Garmin Mobile pc on the netbook and it also does a good job offroad.

Default GPOz

Hi Roger - U have just answered my question of - Can you use decent GPS software on an IPAD. Can you load up Hema Topo maps onto the IPAD and track and Map where you have been etc. I am looking for something that I can load Topo maps of private properties etc, not just of national parks. I am new to the GPS software as well?

As my first post indicates - its an upgrade ( so that pretty much indicates i'm not a first time user.... ) that runs CE5 and i'm running Ozi for off road use so that bit is well and truly under control.

What i'm interested is is CE compatibnle NAVIGATION software only - yes i've seen ipads and like the system but its not helpfull for the purpose of the post.
