Default XJ timing a possibility?

Hey guys/gals

After months of the XJ not working and trying to figure out what the problem could be I am just wondering if the timing could be off?

The only other sensor I didn't replace was the other CPS (camshaft) I did the Crankshaft one but I have this feeling the sensors might not even be the problem.

So, how do I find out if the timing is off? I don't know much about cars at all but I have heard people talk about taking off the distributor cap and seeing what position that little arm thing is at and a whole bunch of other stuff.

So please, gimmie some ideas on what to do!

Cheers
Dylan

p.s. pictures would help alot as I don't really know what is what.

Timing is operated by the ECU (computer) and is set at the factory so unlikly to change. Theorectically you can turn the dizzy in any position you like and the timing will not change. I would say there is something else wrong. If you put up the codes on this thread, you may get the answer. A few people on here know what the codes mean.
But you will need to ask or search on how to get the codes to display on your dash, I do not know how to do that bit as I never had too.

Regards Anthony

Do the simple stuff first, plugs leads dizzy cap rotor, then the cam shaft sensor.
Check the air filter too.

I had a similar problem, I had improvement with every thing I changed.

I wouldn't be playing with the dizzy, unless I was replacing it, but that's gotta be the last option.

Also had the overheating issue, once again a blockage in the tank, but needed to get this stuff sorted out other wise it could all end up costing a whole lot more than the cars worth..

I guess my car had just been neglected over the years.
Now runs great.

But do search the forums, everything's here you'll ever want to know, your searching will also improve in time
