Welcome to AJOR...

To begin with you probably need to consider how your going to use it. That is, do you want to customise it right up and make it extremely capable offroad or did you just want it for the occasional weekend adventure? This decision will probably affect what cars you do and do not consider when looking.

Ultimately the main things to consider (IMO) are:

- Age and kilometres
e.g. 97 model with 50K vs. 06 model with 100K - the 97 model has lower kilometres but at the end of the day is 14 years old - not a major issue but needs to be considered.

- Service history
Try and get one where the owner can provide a service history. It'll give you piece of mind and an idea of possible future problems/costs.

- Modifications
More mods means less work for you to do and more immediate fun to be had, but are they done right? Less mods means more money to spend but you get to do it your way.

-Offroad work
Has it been offroad much? Not something that should turn you off (it is a Jeep at the end of the day) but you should probably look for signs of abuse (dents, cracks, splits) from where the previous owner has been a little over zealous, signs of rust underneath from lots of beach work, etc.

There'll be more qualified people to give more technical advice but this list will be a good starting point.

Geez for my money that 97 seems like a decent buy. I know it's high kms but really with the right maintenance you can get a lot more from these engines.

It comes with a solid nice looking set of rims which will take some good all terrains and also the hardtop! It'd cost you a packet to get one fitted to the 1998 model ($1500+) plus the 97 has got some roof racks fitted already. I do hate the backyard butchering of the door skins to fit the fusion audio.

Mechanically the 98 looks like it may be a little better off. The 97 has definitely seen the offroad.. with the aftermarket airfilter fitted and it looks like it has a little bit of a spring suspension lift. Dust in the engine bay and the interior like that is indicative of some work in the dirt. Paint looks good though!

97 looks like a better buy to me from the picture but take for a drive and have a goo look over and underneath to get truer picture of their history

Thanks alot for all the replies guys! much appreciated.
I have had a look around and found two more, they cost a bit extra but i though paying extra for newer model and fewer kilometres might be worth it?

Here they are:
