Welcome to AJOR...
To begin with you probably need to consider how your going to use it. That is, do you want to customise it right up and make it extremely capable offroad or did you just want it for the occasional weekend adventure? This decision will probably affect what cars you do and do not consider when looking.
Ultimately the main things to consider (IMO) are:
- Age and kilometres
e.g. 97 model with 50K vs. 06 model with 100K - the 97 model has lower kilometres but at the end of the day is 14 years old - not a major issue but needs to be considered.
- Service history
Try and get one where the owner can provide a service history. It'll give you piece of mind and an idea of possible future problems/costs.
- Modifications
More mods means less work for you to do and more immediate fun to be had, but are they done right? Less mods means more money to spend but you get to do it your way.
-Offroad work
Has it been offroad much? Not something that should turn you off (it is a Jeep at the end of the day) but you should probably look for signs of abuse (dents, cracks, splits) from where the previous owner has been a little over zealous, signs of rust underneath from lots of beach work, etc.
There'll be more qualified people to give more technical advice but this list will be a good starting point.
