Default Looking to buy Cherokee

Hi everyone,
I am a current Land Rover Discovery owner, that is fed up with their inherent problems and lack of reliability

I am planning in the next month or so, to sell my discovery, and buy a Jeep Cherokee, most likely a late XJ, but i am interested in the Grand Cherokee also.

Its main purpose will be for off roading, and camping on weekends. Does anyone have any advice for me? Good and bad points to keep an eye out for?

Thanks in advance!

Better off with the XJ than the WJ, in my opinion, as you can make mods to make it more capable, rather than make mods to make it modifiable. I mean that the 242 transfer case is better than a 249, and even a Dana 35 is better than a 44A. Also, WJ electronics make it a bit hard for changes like tyre size & gearing....

I'm not sure that by changing from a disco to an XJ you're going to be leaving all your problems behind...

I've had my XJ for 5 years now and initially I thought I had made a mistake buying one. Quite a few repairs and electrical issues had me pi$$ed off.

But, touch wood, it's been great for the last 4 years and I thoroughly enjoy going away camping with the family in it.

You may find the ride a bit crude after the disco and a little less cabin room too.

The upside is, they are relatively simple to work on and the mods are limited only by your budget.

I would suggest you keep some of your "purchase" money aside for initial repairs, once you've ironed out the wrinkles then the upgrades/modifications can begin.

Enjoy,
Paul.
