Default CRD 100 000 Service - timing belt change not required

Took my CRD Jk to Nunawading Chrysler for a 100 000km service today, to be told the timing belt change is only required at 200 000kms.. Is this right guys? I also checked the service manual and it also states changing at 200 000kms.

Personally........ I believe 200,000 is a bit too much of a risk for something important like a timing belt. I hope they are REALLY certain about this as the consequence of failure is pretty severe. Be interesting to see if teh duration is supported by VM Motori as well.

Puts discussions of changing half the front of the engine ( as some seem determined to do.... ) as well as timing belts in perspective doesn't it ?

When I had the Subaru Forester, the first 100,000 had the belt changed, then again at 200,000, but when I took it in for the 300,000km service they asked how long ago the belt was changed and I said 100,000km... He looked at me a laughed and said no, time wise.. He said the belts were not overly effected by km, more by deterioration over time and said they should be replaced every 5 years. Since the 'average' is 20,000km per year, he reckons this is where the 100,000km recommendation comes in.

Since I had done the last 100,000km in 2 years I didnt change the belt. I have since sold it and last I saw it was on about 380,000km and still going strong (bout 4 years since the last belt change).

I have VM press release (VM Document #1724, dated 11-Jun-07) that states 140,000 km for the RA-428 (1600 bar, 130kW/460Nm). Mate, I'd still personally change it at 100,000 km. If the belt goes kaput, your engine is REALLY fcuked up. Whoever wants this PDF, PM your email address.
