Default Moving to Mt Isa

Moving to Mt Isa in the new year to start an apprenticeship with Xstrata Copper. Seeing as I've never been there was wondering if anyone had any info to share, particularly on areas to live etc. I know its not the most desirable place to live but it will only be for the 4 years of the apprenticeship. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've been there several times in the last five or so years as I have some clients there.
Even as an outsider/ non local I like the place. Great pubs and clubs, generally great people, a lake for watersports and lots of things to do. I have noticed changes over the last few years and it doesn't really have a small town feel about it.
There are many worse places to live IMHO.

Hey Lux,
Me and my family have a motel in Mt Isa since '04 and have been working there when I dont have managers in there. Soliders Hill is a good place to live. Its an alright place to live, just emerge yourself in your work lol. Otherwise you'll drink and gamble all of your money (trust me I've seen it happen many many times before.) For a 4wdriver its a good place, heaps of places to go. Weekends away are away. Karumba is a good place to go for 2 days etc. Send me a PM if you need any more info.

Its hot, very hot.
Lots of flies.
Good social life when you make some friends.
Drink heaps of beer.
Drink some more beer.
And then have a few more beers.
Dont look in the mirror when you leave.

I wouldnt have to many beers or you might become one of the locals and 'sleep' on the road.... It was worse when a locus plague came and stayed in isa for a few weeks, they were ****** everywhere!! Couldn't open your mouth without getting a gob full.

Doing a mechanical fitter/turner apprenticeship. Been living in Townsville for the past year so am getting used to the heat, I've never seemed to have a big problem with heat anyway, just need to drink more water. Have found a few places for rent online but don't really want to start renting until a bit closer to moving out there, only problem will be other apprentices getting all the places if I leave it too long.
