Default Glasshouse Mountain Trip with boys from patrol 4x4 forum.

My son in law has a SWB GQ with 2" lift and 32 Bighorns.

He is not really an experienced 4wd driver so he asked me to run as co-pilot with him in his GQ today.

We went into the Glasshouse Mountains and he put that shorty into places he never thought he could under guidance from me and the patrol guys.

We did some mean stuff. Didn't bend or dent anything. Towbar belted a few times. Slow going.

The most interesting part of the day was when we came to a rotten, rutted,
rocky part of he track only reserved for double diff locked vehicles.

My son in law did not do it. Nor did a few others.

One guy there Matt had a swb NJ Pajero 3.5 litre that had ripped out the rear locker air line during the day and had an auto locker in the front.

I got Matt up the track by guiding him. He gave this Pajero hell. I have a
new look on these vehicles now as he blew me away where he took this damn thing today. Matt only knows one speed. FLAT OUT.

We had another GQ wagon do the same track and he was on the last final section when we all heard 2 almighty bangs. He was giving it to it.

He popped both rear springs out of the mounts. Still there but very sideways.

He got it up to the top and then the rain came.

We jacked the left up and I got underneath and we heaved down on the axle to pop the left spring back in. This was on the side of a ridge with an unreal vertical drop off on the right side. Flat wall on the left.

However when we went to jack the right, due to the mud and rain, the truck slid about a foot to the right towards the drop. Leaving about 6 inches before it went tumbling. Jack was dropped real quick and guys pushing the truck.

I noticed a tree right to the left and we got the strap out and lo and behold it was the right length to loop the strap around and back to the truck.

There is a god.

Got back on the jack. Got back down on our backs in the mud and got that spring back in.

New suspension check in order I said.

Springs wrong size. Shock travel too long. Shocks don't work as travel limiters.

Any way we all got home safe.

Heres the video of shano just before he popped the rear springs. I'm the guy right at the start in the Akubra and jeans and blue t-shirt.

And the guy in the background yelling out directions.

Shano driving the Patrol is an ex ARMY driving instructor.

We shared many tales on this trip about the Army.

We were both asking for Unimogs.

It had just started raining, there were 3-4 foot deep holes and it was clay and smooth rock.

He did bloody awesome for no lockers to get up there.

Did you hear the 2 big bangs when he got to the top? Sounds as 3 loud clicks on the vid.

That was the rear springs chucked.

Yep that was little red. Considering it just started raining before we hit it.
I jumped in and rode with Shano for the next bits.

We didn't go Big Red as it was pouring and had water running down it. Big Red is about a 45 degree ski jump. Rocky and you know the rest.

You can flip on the side in the dry or roll back over on the roof and down
We just went around and followed back to the start of Little Red.

That was fun in itself in the rain. No way Big Red in the wet.

Mud and rocks and launching.

I can't wait to get the XJ out there. Not on Big Red in the wet though. Little red was bad enough.

I'll be hitting Little Red in the XJ when I change the tyres and lift her.

Rubicon 3.5 lift coming. Yes I know all the other stuff I have to do.

I will just run 31 muddies at Janowen until I have finished my mods.

Big Red was a waterfall yesterday. Started raining as we attacked Little Red.

Shane would have had better traction if it hadn't started raining.

He blew me away when he got to the top.

And Matt in his swb pajjy too. Asking for a video on his effort.

He took out the award for the day between him and Shane.

Did you see the wrecked sedan at the bottom of big red in the bush? It is at the right of the track.

I think it is a Mazda.
