Default Interesting Article on the 2012 Wrangler

Interesting article on the 2012 Wrangler. Things I did not know;

- 4 out 5 sales of the Wrangler are the CRD. This makes a complete mockery of all the hype around the Pentastar.

- The new Pentastar's fuel consumption figures aren't good at all. Compare the humble Commodore;

Commodore(3.6SIDI)
Power (kW);210
Torque(kN/m);350
Combined (L/100);~9.9

Wrangler (3.6 Pentastar)
Power (kW);209
Torque(kN/m);347
Combined (L/100);~14

The "Jebus" engine it is NOT

- The expensive price of the diesel engine is apparantly Chrysler recovering their "development costs". What these "development costs" are I don't know as Chysler buys this motor from VM Motori.

This article has answered a long running mystery for me, which is why the diesel cost is so high, since Ford sells the Territory with the better V6 Duratorq as a $3355 option vs Chrysler sells the 2.8L I4 for $6000 option.

The answer is naked greed and profiteering, and here I thought there was a ligit reason!

Luck I bought my car when the diesel was a $4K option!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Chrysler does not deserve ownership of the Jeep brand.

I'm assuming SMH talks direct with Chrysler (as alluded to in the article) and gets the figures from them. Why would Chrysler lie?

Why would Chrysler lie???

Hmm, lets see, they tell us rubbish fuel consumption figures, they way overcharge for everything from spare parts to diesel options, and they tell us we should buy the most expensive option (the waaaaay overpriced CRD model) because everyone else is buying them.

Yep, that sounds pretty honest to me.

Yeah I saw that claim about recovering the development cost on the diesel engine, and considering VM developed it (before Chrysler bought it) and the base engine was used in the KJ for years before it was upgraded for the JK, you have to wonder just how much money Chrysler has sunk into it - just a pathetic excuse for price gouging.

comparing a wrangler fuel consumption to a commodore for starters makes no sense, aerodynamics alone are not doing wrangler any favours so that is ludicrous to me.
A tthe end of the day if people are willing to pay that price for a wrangler CRD then good on Chrysler i say if they can make more money and at the end of the day thats why they are in business. If you want to stick it to them then you have 2 options, dont buy a Jeep at all or buy the petrol but one thing is for sure they are not forcing anyone to purchase it.
As for the the price difference with the territory one factor is certain and that is Ford probably can move a hell of alot more territories than jeep can move wranglers so that gives them a greater volume to spread out costs.

Dont forget Jeep is typically a niche brand where ford is mainstream so i certainly would expect prices at Jeep to be higher for this very reason but then again they are still good bloody value.

I dont understand why people complain so much about this stuff as noone has a gun to your head to purchase it, there are alot of options out there albeit alot boring as bat shite but its your decision

the fact is that v.m. motori are an engine making company. they produce engines in a form that can be just dropped in to any vehicle. chrysler have no development costs at all here. vm is 50% owned by general moors and i believe fiat have a piece of it too. the high price is probably caused by fiat having a grab at chysler's expense.
