Default ZJ ZG RPM - How many is too many?

Hi all,

just wondering how many RPM is too many on the ol' ZJ?

Road trip Melb/ACT and back over weekend, towing covered in 6x4 with some MTBs on top and cruise control set just over 110. Also running 31s on 2 inch lift, spare on roof and engel in boot, 3 blokes on board.

A couple of times, climbing, the cruise kicked back to 2nd and rev's hit 4750!!!!

Is that too many? Should I take crusie off at that point or set speed lower on longer climbs?

Was impressed by the way it towed though, and yes it chewed the juice up averaging 19L/100km.

I Don't use cruise towing anything, and for me 4750rpm is to high if you want it to last.

I've towed lots of things with lots of Jeeps and the 4.0l petrols are great but about 3500rpm is about it for me and my old XJ towed a 1500kl van when we first owned it we have it back again now and still going great with 320,000k's on the clock, and my TJ (3 speed auto) towing my camper i don't go much over 3000rpm and most of the time i'm doing about 2500rpm.

Maybe a bit to slow for some, but mine are,and will still be going long after the 4750rpm motors are dead.

And fuel consumption is more around 15-16 lt/100k's.

Thats my thinking maybe not everybodys.

thanks DrJ, that's the sort of info i'm after. it only did it abut 3 times over 1500km trip, most of time it cruised nicely in OD on about 2500 with a few kick backs for smaller inclines.

Needed to sit just over 110 (113 by GPS) to stop it kicking back a lot more often.

Next time i'll take each hill on it's merit and kick cruise off when needed and let the hill dictate my speed.

Its not too high as in hurting the motor but it will hurt your fuel bill, I used to overide (still do) mine as the cruise is very sensitive & seems to like to work hard to get back up to set speed in shortest time.

Yep, knock the Cruise off on the hills, always and hit the OD button to OFF when you are doodling around town under 80.
If it really kicks down hard, when you are overtaking or putting the boot in, like it slams down to 2nd, then you probably have a solenoid going or gone, best to get it replaced as it only gets worse. Thats in a ZG.

The ZJ even from new on cruise control kicks back to far. Was the biggest fault Dad found with the car. Towing the van alway suck the fuel.
