Default Decision Time - sell or repair

Hello all,

I am looking for advice on whether I should cut my loses or keep going.

I have just got my Jeep (2003 WJ 160,000 kms) back from a service from an independent mechanics who specialises in Jeeps. I had previously been taking it to the dealer who sold it to me (Gary Crick in Noosa).
**
The report was not good.

The following things were wrong:

Number 4 and 5 injectors are leaking badly.
The front shocks need replacing.
The front and rear diff is full of metal
Rear axle seals are starting to leak and will require bearings and seals asap.

None of this was ever mentioned by the Noosa Jeep people who I suspect were stringing me along for the servicing fees........

He has quoted a repair bill of around $6,000 to do all the work ($4,000 is the injectors). I am going to take it to another garage to have a look at but I was wondering what you guys thought? I am thinking of not doing the repairs and trading it in for something else. I seem to be throwing lots of money at it as there is usually a $1,000 worth of work that needs to be done each service. Quotes on price I have had for trade in is around $8,000.

I really like the car - it is smooth to drive, lots of space and I really like the offroad capability. I don't really want to get rid of it but common sense says I should. Downside of this is that the replacement would be something low milage and new like a Honda CRV or something unoffroady like that (wife's orders).

Can anyone offer any advice on whether it is worth shelling out the cash to save the Jeep or should I just sell?

Thanks,
Spaaarkz.**

They said that they had to remove the engine to get access to the bit of the injector that needed fixing. It doesn't sound right to me. I am going to get a second opinion from another mechanic........

Mate if you want to PM me I can sort you out with replacement diffs (complete) AND replacement shockies for very little (I have a ton of spares). So if you can get your injectors sorted by some NON criminals in the industry, you may get another 150,000KM out of her, and be as happy as you should be.

I would think it depends in how much you want to keep it and what can you do yourself. Shocks and diffs are really nothing. Even the injectors (we are talking 2.7 CRD aren't we) are not that big a deal. Do some research on the Benz forums injector replacement from over there is not that bad and can be done yourself of you are so minded. If not you could source injectors and cut the access hole in the firewall panel which gives access to no. 4 & 5 injectors.

Do some research here and on the Benz forums before you go and sell your jeep for a CRV. But if you don't 4wd then maybe it's not for you anyway.

At $8000 if those are the only problems I'd say it'd be a good buy for someone handy.

Can you trust the independent as well. How has he diagnosed that 4 & 5 are leaking badly. Are they leaking internally or externally. Does he have the correct diagnostic computer to read and test the 2.7 because nothing OBD generic has full functionally with the 2.7 and there is only 1 aftermarket device I know about that can. From my info neither of the jeep dealers on the sunshine coast even have full diagnostic access to the 2.7.
Be sure you actually have such problems before you decide which to go also.
