Default Check gauges light

Hi guys,

Went for a wheel today and things got a little hectic.

Got snatched out by a mate only to have the snatch wrap around the wheel when he was pulling and it snapped my break line.

Managed to get out but my ride home got interesting when the check gauges light came on and my temp began to creep up, it fluctuated but was higher the normal had to stop twice due to it nearly at RED, however I 'think' this is unrelated to the light and was caused by mud in my radiator fins.

The main problem is that my volts seemed about 1V less then normal and the car didn't want to crank over. Managed to get it home but am still having issues are volts are low, I 'think' my alternator may have bit the bullet, but can anyone else confirm and tell me where and what to check first and how.

Thanks!

CHECK GAUGES is most likely caused from your xj overheating ,it usually comes with beeping (on update ) to make you look at the gauge , had same thing happen to me once but gf was driving and i was in the passenger seat so i was glad for the audible warning .

The alternator is probably full of mud as well as the rad. Remove the drive belt so you can turn the alternator back and forth by hand. Spray copious amounts of WD40 on it while doing so. By copious amounts I mean as much as a can or three. That should clean it all out and hopefully restore function.
