Default Painting a caravan

Hey guys I am refurbishing my van after eight years of sitting in basically one place. I am giving it a major face lift as it was never completly done nine years ago when we got it. So my question is I am in the process of bogging 35 years worth of knocks & scrapes. I have scurbbed the roof and bare metald it. As for the sides apart from scrapes I have not not bare metalled too much of it. I want to know will I need to bare metal the whole van and etch prime it like I am the roof? Or can I etch the bare areas and wipe down the film off the rest and paint over some of the existing white. I have 8L, 3m automotive enamel and 3.5L of etch. I have enough white but if I need to bare metal the rest I need more etch, which I hope I can do without.

Regards A

You can etch prime the bare metal and paint over the previous paint. Just make sure you rub it well or you'll be able to see the edge.

Thanks motas, I assume the same applies then for my paint as it is really an anealed paint and not like normal enamel or acrylc. Given that I should be good to go. I might start the job next week when the rain clears. I will turps the existing white to remove the film and any old polish residue and feather out any edges.

Regards A

X2......Prepsol and a few Scothbrite pads will speed up the process, or spray it with engine degreaser, if you Scotchy it you wont need to sand it (unless its a bit furry or has overspray on it) and is much easier on your fingertips
