Default thermo fan probs

hi guys
have been a long time reader tho have just registered as i have a problem which is bugging the hell out of me

i have read a few of the other thermo fan threads tho im still having trouble sorting out my thermo fan issues

i am wanting on getting my cooling system up to scratch for the upcoming summer and have recently replaced water pump, thermostat, fan clutch, rad cap and serp belt and will be looking into an upgraded radiator in the very near future it is a late 98 of the 2nd series of xj's with an auto trans

i have also ordered a new coolant temp sensor and awaiting on its arrival

the major problem i am having is getting the damn thermo to run i turn the ac on and they do not to run

she reaches half way on the gauge and dont turn on where they used to she runs pretty warm most of the time and has the occansional boil over if stuck in the usual sydney peak hour which im guessing would be from having no aux fan running while the car is sitting still

i have checked all fuses all ok
i have replaced the relay still no go
while i was putting the relay in i noticed something odd if i jiggle it while putting it in the relay will click and the fan will run so i can say the relay is working and the unit is gettin power
when i remove the temps sensor they also run

i am not real good with a multimeter but pretty good with a spanner and cant get my head around alot of the things that are being said on a few threads about testing with multimeters test lights etc

is there anything else i can check which will help me sort this out? in laymans terms pls :P

can anyone point me out on where i may be going wrong or just a breakdown of what else i can check??

if not does anyone know of a good mechanic or auto elec in sydney that will be able to diagnose this cherokee prob without taking me for a ride?

i really dont want to install a switch to bypass any probs as i want to regas my aircon to keep me cool

thx guys
dan

Sounds like there is a problem with the relay switch wire. The thing that activates the relay. Now whether that is a result of a faulty sensor I can not say. But buy the sounds of it if you bypass the sensor then it works. Also I have bought new relays (Narva) that have been faulty, they did the same thing wriggle the post and it would activate. But I would check the sensor first.

it was a narva relay tho i dont think the relay was a prob as i used the orig relay in the starter position and car started fine so i ruled that out but replaced it anyway in saying that with the temp sensor would that stop the fan from activating when i select the ac? and also could the ac clutch relay have anything to do with it?

also how can i pull the fault codes ive seen it done on youtube wit the 5 key turn technique then codes pop up on the odo cant get it to work can i do this with my model or do i have to plug it up to a diagnostic tool?

also how can i find this relay switch wire would i have to pull the bottom off the power distubition centre and chase the wire?

One wire will be power in, one will be power out to the fan. There will be an ground wire and the other will be the switch wire. I assume the wires went on the right posts when you put it back together. Also forget dash codes it will not work on a 98; you need a diagostic tool.

well put the xj back together this morning after doing the water pup thermostat new clutch fan radiator cap and serp belt n too my shock horror while i was doing a radiator flush before entering the new coolant i was standing there and heard this odd loud whirling sound i havent heard for a while well needless to say it was my thermos switching on )) my guess is that it had to do with the new thermostat but thats jus a stab in the dark the old one was a 82 deg and the one i installed was the 91 so wether it was this or something completely diff i have o idea but im stoked either way ))

happy days
