Default Buying an XJ

Hi guys,
I found your site through 4WDAction. I am thinking about buying an XJ sometime in the future. I don't know a lot about them, and was hoping that you may be able to share a little info. Here's a list of things that I wouldn't mind help with.
Are there many generic mechanical problems that they suffer from?
Are there any specific places I should keep an eye out for rust?
What are the differences between the Sport/Limited/Classic?
When did the "update" happen, and what was updated? Is the update better?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I probably should add that I'm looking for something that I can build into a tourer.

Common probs:
Diff bearings
leaking heater cores
Fuel pump
lower ball joints, due to stock ones having no grease nipple
Panhard/track bar problems
cracking chassis near the steering box
lower control arms that stretch once rebushed
sagging leaf springs
leaking oil filter adapter
starter motor failure caused by leaking oil filter adapter
Neutral safety switch

That is the major list. In terms of problematic diff rebuilds and heater core leaks are the biggest pain. Heater core means an aircon regas and about 8-10hrs. Diff rebuild is common across heaps of cars in recent years but still an expensive exercise.

Hope that gives you a start. On the bright side they are fun too drive and from where I am from they are called "Hot" unlike Cruisers & Patrols which are considered a bit "old man"..

Regards Anthony

I'm in the Redlands. Looking for something around the 4-5k mark (even less if possible) that can be on the road straight away. I'll be selling my other vehicle first, so I won't have time to fix something up. Would like to spend another 2.5-3k on mods once I have it.
