Default Ignition won't turn...

Hey guys, just went out to start my 98 update XJ and I put the keys in the ignition and it wouldn't turn. It has happened before and I just slide the key in and out a couple time and it would be fine. But now it won't budge at all.

Any ideas???

Turn the steering wheel a little bit. Might be hard but turn the wheel and then try to turn the key. Attempt to turn the key while you're pulling on the steering wheel.

Nah its not the steering lock. The wheel turns freely... Its almost like the key isn't lining up the barrel properly

Second thread recommends shooting a few drops of WD-40 into the hole to try to "Free it up".

get a pencil and scrape some of the graphite off the end with a knife on to some paper crease the paper and with a small brush flick the powderd graphite into the key slot this will lubricate the tumblers without any wet stiky residue in the mechinism

Thanks guys, looks like the graphite trick has worked for the time being, but it is still intermittent. Looks like I'll pull the barrel tomorrow and head down to the locksmiths

Just to follow up, I took the barrel into the locksmiths today. They had to take all the pins out as they had barbs on the ends from 15 years of use. They filed them down one by one, cleaned it all out and re-greased it all. Told me to expect another 15 years of use before it needs doing again
