Default Engine light

Hi there I have done a little search but this wasn't very helpful. The light came on last night but I keep going and I could feel the power loss. It drives ok my feeling is fuel is there anyway to get the code from the computer with the reader? I have read on the net that there some special combos and it give you the code on speedo. Any help is appreciated

G'day FAB, welcome to the forums!

To get the engine codes you'll need a device that plugs into the OBD2 port under the drivers side footwell. The service guys all have these, and generally won't charge to give you the error codes - they'll just charge to fix it.

I use a scanguage2, and leave it in there all the time - it gives live information as you drive, as well as being a scan tool.

You could also get one of these - a Bluetooth unit that can be used with an App like 'Torque Pro'. They're cheap, but effective (I have one of these too, but rarely use it because I now have the scanguage)

I could give you some advice from recent experiences.

If you have a loss of power when accelerating, and it idles like a tractor, you most likely have a misfire. Firstly check that you're air filter is clean and the tube isn't blocked. If it's still running rough, check your spark plugs, I had 2 cracked ones only a fortnight ago on cylinders 1 & 3 causing me grief. There'll be a black 'burn mark' down the side of them if they're cracked. They only cost $8 each from Auto One.

If they're fine, then you might have a faulty coil pack, or an injector problem.

Check the wiring to each of the injectors to make sure they're connected with no worn wires.

The KK has 3 of coil packs, and you'll need the code to know which cylinder is misfiring. FYI - The Dealer quoted $154 for each pack, and a 2-3 day wait for delivery. Suttons in Homebush Quoted $112 and next day delivery - genuine Mopar parts too. Needless to say, I got them from suttons...

Having the codes would obviously reduce your time to diagnose the problem.

Let me know If I can help anymore. Good Luck!

I should have mentioned that it is diesel well I am going to put a fuel cleaner in it and fill it with Vortex it might help. I have also read that the fuel cap could cause an issue not sure why.

Fab I believe the old key trick to display the code in the odometer window doesn't work on KKs, it worked on KJs up through 2005, and then they changed the bus and it didn't work on 2006 and 2007 KJs.

That is a shame, it would have been handy but the light didn't turn on again I drove about 50 Kay's today. I got some diesel conditioner and filled it with diesel vortex I will post again to update sometime.

Hey Fab, how many km's have you done in the KK. I had my KK diesel check engine light come on a few months ago and had the engine go into limp mode which limited it to just over 2000rpm. My problem was the turbo hoses had a small hole and needed replacing . Common problem with the diesel in our KK's and happens around 80,000 - 100,000 km's on most of them. Just a thought.
