Default Turbo Whistle

Had a heap of work done at the start of the year.....

Multiple Oil Leaks (so jeep says, more like cash cow walked in the minor leak and got stuck with a ludicrous bill 7k and told multiple leaks and gaskets on lower part of turbo had to be done, meaning entry from below).

Anyway aside from this fact, when I got it back after lots of stuff arounds.

When I put the power down to accelerate I get, what I can only describe as a whistling sounds from the turbo...

Pull back on the throttle and it stops...

Gradual acceleration does not seem to whistle..

Is this something that I should be worried about????

It sounds normal to me, it is interesting why you hear/notice it now and not before. Perhaps a different air filter was used or some air filter plumbing wasn't installed correctly.

FWIW, a true diesel head loves the whistle

Go back to the stealership that did the work and get them to check it, If they say nothing is wrong at least it is noted & if there is a failure later on you can put it back on them.

My WH CRD does not have a whistle from the turbo (that I can hear from inside the cabin), just an intake noise since I fitted the snorkel.
Does not sound normal to me.

Default Turbo Whistle

A turbo wistle can be damaged fins on exhaust wheel or compressor wheel of turbo. But there is a distinct difference between the sound of a turbo under normal opperation and a damaged one

^ was going to say, the whistle you get is "normal" for a turbo as the rush of air intake into the turbo.. but you will deff hear a different whistle to a damaged turbo whistle than a normal whistle..

also - to the snorkel whistle - that is normal. had a toyota 4runner do the same thing, no whistle - fitted a snorkle created a whistle. if you can replicate... have some one out side car and plant it the air being sucked into the snork - is the whistle noise you can hear - as far as i'm aware after 6 years of whistling - no damage

good luck!

Thanks for the info, only got the noise from the turbo after they did all the crap with leaks and replacing the gaskets on the Turbo. If it settles down I will not worry too much, but I will be letting them know what is happening. Will not be going back to Jeep in Townsville as they stuffed me around for nearly 4 months trying to get this done, 2 months of this was waiting to be told parts had arrived. Ordered and arrived late December, took a phone call from me in late February to be advised they had been there that long, great customer service.

I believe they caused more leaks just to get a larger bill out of me, unfortunately cannot prove concisely, however it got heated and they dropped the end bill by nearly 1K.

No snorkel, just the standard air box filter

One day I might fork out for a snorkel

Interestingly after making some changes to my inlet manifold (cleanout, block egr port, port shaping) my turbo whistle has significantly reduced.
