Default 1997 XJ Keyless entry / immobiliser issues

My kids were playing with the car's remote control (locking and unlocking the car) today when they came running to me saying something is burning. When I got there saw smoke from under the dashboard on the driver's side. Quickly disconnected the battery and waited for the smoke to clear and things to cool down. After reconnecting the battery the unlock function on the remote no longer worked - it did turn on the lights in the car, but did not unlock the doors. This also resulted in the immobiliser not being disabled and therefore cannot start the car (starts and runs for a few seconds after which it dies).

Strange thing is that after some time the unlock started to work again, but the immobiliser still not disabling. When the key is in the ignition and I then unlock the car then it works and I can start and run the car for some time.

I opened up the dash and found the "thing" that burned (see pics attached). Firstly, can someone tell me what this is and secondly why would it work intermittently (looks like it is totally fried).

Bottom line really is I want to know what it is (so I can find a replacement), why did it melt like that, and lastly if I get it going in the morning would it be ok to drive like that or do I risk causing some other damage.

Thanks

Andre

It turned out to be an after market alarm / immobiliser system (no wonder I could not find it anywhere) which I inherited from the previous owner.

At the auto electrician now to have it removed.

I was gonna say... It looked like a dodgy GPS tracker. Good thing it's sorted out for you now though.

Fire would have been nasty.

You let your kids play with the immobilizer fob?
How old are they?
Was they key with it?
Not a good look if they got into the car & it moved causing a crash!!
