I know you say water isn't an issue, but my Cousin (with the OEM airbox) hydrolocked his JK and it was written off because the repair bill was going to be rediculous!! Personally, I would steer clear from an exposed CAI system if you do any kind of wheelin.
This is on my wish list:

Very similar to the OEM airbox, but better flow, the icing on the cake for me is that the AEV snorkel works with it.
Another option is the CAI from Rippmods:

Again compatiable with a snorkel, but I believe you have to order the extension piece that runs from the CAI to the snorkel.
If your looking at getting extra air in there, I've read other Jeep forums, where guys have run a throttle body from a Dodge Viper and I believe there is a memeber on AJOR who recently ordered one from the States. From what I've read the results are hit and miss, but most positive results are from guys who bolt it on and aren't using any tuners that provide a set tune (fuel eccon tune), as it has caused the JK to think it's running lean and it throws out an error and goes to LIMP mode.
But realisticly, you need to put the JK on a dyno to see if it's really gaining kw/nm, or if it's just snakeoil. If you're going to spend money on something like the above, perhaps just put that cash aside and set up a savings plan for a supercharger
