Default Barrington Tops Camping

Hi All,

Looking for recommendations on a good base camp for the barrington tops area for a long weekend camping.

Looking to explore the area doing a bit of 4wding, fishing and just chilling out around a fire. Not keen on setting up a new site each night thus looking for a good base camp

Something on a stream or river, big enough for 3-4 tents and with toilets would be perfect!!

Thanks,
Brad

Telegherry, Frying Pan and Coachwood are all fairly big areas and the toilets have just been revamped at both I'm pretty sure, both next to Telegherry river.

Telegherry was closed last time I was up that way, maybe a month ago, so might pay to check with NSW parks and wild life (Gloucester 02 65385300). It's a stones throw from the other two even if it's still closed.

These three are one the Dungog side of the park, as well as Lady's Wells however Lady's Wells can be very crowded in peak season.

On the northern or Gloucester side of the park; there are plenty of other popular areas that I'm not overly familiar with, Polblue camping area, Devils Hole bush camp ect ect.

4x4ing up that way can be tricky as alot of tracks are generally not sign posted and tend to be over grown from lack of use, which I'm single handedly trying to rectify But if you just follow your nose and have recovery gear and are with other vehicles you should be right. You'll find most tracks will dart off the edges of the main roads and some will even look to be only wide enough for bikes but open up further in...

You can get Hema maps of the entire area off eBay if you search Barrington Tops, about $10. They aren't super accurate, some tracks they show aren't actually there anymore but it's a good rough guide...

Default Bretti Camp Site

This camp site comes highly recommend from a fellow AJOR member. "Bretti" camping location is for anyone looking for a long stay free camp (stays of up to 30 days are allowed). The facilites are: massive area along side the Barnard River, some shade trees along the river side spots, long drop toilets, a few picnic tables. Water from the river is OK for washing/showering in, or maybe doing the dishes, but don't drink it (unless you boil it). There are some swiming holes in the river if desired, but it seems too shallow for paddle craft. There is a working cattle property next door and the cows do wander across the causeway and are moved around to various pastures, so you may find a few cows near your camp.

Photos of the place can be found here:

There are plenty others on the Glouster side e.g. a private camp site up through Copeland. http://www.camp-cobark.com.au/ I camped there number of times all be it a couple of years ago now.

Many others as well ....great area

Have fun and stay safe

I just came back from 6 days at Bretti Reserve, was up there for an astronomy camp. It's a big area and pretty far north from Barrington Tops (being up the Thunderbolt Way). It is on the Barnard River but there is a working cattle property right next door and cattle wander around the Reserve from time to time. It popular with caravan people, and it's not 4WD territory, as all the land around that area is cattle country.

BTW I think there was a total fire ban up there.
