Default WK2 bonnet - aluminium?

Some trivia about the WK2 that I discovered yesterday.

My son just got his L's and I bought a pair of magnetic L plates for him. So we go for a lesson, put one of the plates on the bonnet and it just slipped right off.

I first thought "damn $2 shop rubbish", but then tried other panels on the WK2 and the plate stuck to them.

So the WK2 bonnet is not steel and I guess it must be aluminium. I suppose that also explains how a single gas strut manages to hold the bonnet open.

We ended up using garden ties to secure one of the plastic L plates to the grille.

At least the magnetic plates stick to the tailgate.

Correct, I can only assume they did this as it's not structural like a side panel and reduces some of the weight.

So we can add 80kg's of winch and bar on the front instead

Just a tip, for the Ls on our WK2 we use a suction cup one on the windshield. We find it's a lot quicker and easier than garden ties

There you go, I learn something new every day here.

Going through the same thing myself, have renamed my daughter "Mario Andretti"

If visiting NSW from another state our rules are different, "L" plate must be on the outside of the vehicle not the windscreen & max speed 90kmh

•Have L plates displayed clearly at the front and rear exterior of the car (or an L sign on the roof of your instructors vehicle) when driving. L plates cannot be fixed on the window inside the car.

NSW learners are limited to 80 km/h, red Ps to 90 and green Ps to 100.
And it is silly system...
Cheers

Be very very careful with magnetic plates. I've seen too many that have melted onto the car and can't be removed. More of a problem for P platers who leave them on all the time, but worth being aware of anyway.
