Default Head light fuse keeps blowing

my jeep has developed a issue, the main head light fuse keeps blowing.

I haven't touched or changed anything, it takes about a 30mins for it to blow each time, which i think is odd?

as soon as the fuse blows you get the electrical smell. it has happened 3 times and don't want it to happen again.

any on have any ideas??

i have a high quality HID kit 35W and two 35W hid spot lights

without stating the obvious, it sounds like you've got a short somewhere in your system. Given you've changed your headlights, I'd be tempted to pull it all out to see fi there are any frayed wires, connections that are exposed when you were doing the HID install etc. Could just be some exposed wire shorting agains the body or something.

Even if you hand't touched anything lately, the the insulation could just get worn out over time.

I had parker lights that kept on shorting, ended up being some crimp connectors that weren't insulated properly when I was installing new headlights. When the car went over bumps the partially exposed connector would touch the body leading to a short.

I know its vague but electrics are like that.

Good luck finding it

It won't be a short if it takes 30 mins to blow the fuse, my guess will be the ballasts for the illegal HID's....

I would try disconnecting one light at a time & seeing what happens. You could use an amp meter to see what thing is drawing too much.

Is it the correct size fuse for the job? Should it have been upped in size when you did the upgrade and added more lights? Also it might just be saving your switch if you haven't done the relay mod that I've seen on here. That's my first mod once I get mine running.

junglejuice

I thought It might be the case, but it was the fact its not blowing the fuse in line with the HID kit, thought it might be something else

MS

don't remember what brand they are and would need to remove the front grill to see the ballast as its mount on the side of the headlight mould. I got it from Germany.
they have there own fuse, doesn't have a normal type of relay, but has its own that distributes out to 2 ballasts.
the spotties have there own fuse and relay aswell.

Layback.

I might give that a go this weekend

Beefcake

the HID's and spotties are only 35W so they are drawing less power them the stock 55W bulbs
