Default Ebay snorkels vs aus suppliers

Hi, i would like to know if i would benefit by purchasing a snorkel from a mechanic he has quoted me $500 for the snorkel and $200 for fitting.

Ebay has a snorkel here for my vehicle and it is 1/4 of the price i got quoted for, how would this differ from the $500 one i got quoted for? at the end of the day its just a plastic tube right? and mechanics suppliers are rip offs?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JEEP-CHER...9e84a23&_uhb=1

I want to know if buying an ebay snorkel that has already sold 40 on ebay will be just as good as the $500 one from my mechanic.

i've had customers bring in the Ebay snorkel for us to fit, and i'll tell you what, they are so much worse than an AEV, Safari or Airflow.

Why risk thousands on an engine to save a few hundred on a crap snorkel. The ebay ones dont fit great, seem brittle and are suspect quality.

By all means go the cheap route but don't cry when your motor dies in a river crossing.

Pay for quality pay for innovation, not cheap knock offs.

Stick to the main brands for cheap motor insurance instead of just looks.

You get what you pay for...

I agree with everything Yankeedave said. If you plan to use it as a snorkel it's reasonably cheap insurance. Plus the safari aev etc will stand up to a lot more abuse like tree limbs and whatever else.

Both my Cherokee and Rocky use an Ebay snorkel, Cherokee snorkel was around $100 delivered, Rocky snorkel was around $190 delivered. Both have been taken into the bush and have worked just fine, don't pay the inflated prices for a snorkel. They are not hard to fit and the money you save can go towards toher upgrades.

When you say they are not as good, isnt plastic just plastic, like what would make them different to any other plastic? to me if its not a mechanical part, then why buy the expensive stuff? like trans coolers and radiators are just metal work, no mechanical stuff in them just like a snorkel its only plastic...

i feel like $500 on a plastic item is just ridiculous...

wow, no offense mate but you've got a lot to learn about manufacturing and products in general.

plastic is not just plastic and metal is not just metal

soft aluminium is very different to chromoly steel. So different it's not funny. Why do you think planes are not made form heavy steel? or cranes made from brass? It's the same with plastic

Brittle ABS is substantial different to many other polymers, to think plastic is just plastic and metal is just metal is like thinking all women look the same, or all countries speak the same language.

One easy comparrison is perspex vs polycarbinate/lexan. Both look the same but one is near shatter proof and the other breaks very easy
