Default Egr block off mod not so good on an 02

Hi all, just posting my experience with one of the block off methods for the egr.
I have an 02 which has the vacuum operated solenoid for the egr valve. Besides putting in a plate, one of the other methods listed is to put in a screw to block the pipe on the solenoid and then you can slip the line back in place. I've been running this way for just over a year now with city and highway driving. Never really had an issue until this weekend. I had a full load with the family and camping gear, running down the highway I dropped from 5th to 4th and accelerated to pass a car and the engine cut. No warning lights, no bad things, just shut off as if I had pulled the key while driving. I pulled off the road, checked everything ( first thought was my timing belt, or I'd busted a turbo hose) cycled the key and it fired up no issues. Back on the highway, and it did it again, and again, always when trying to get more power for an overtake. It felt like an overboost issue, and if I had the variable vane model I'd suspect a stuck actuator, but on the 02 we don't have the extra gizmos. After pulling out the screw the issue went away. Put the screw back in for giggles, and i can replicate the issue. I'm guessing it's only shown up now because of all the extra gear I was carrying. I know some others here have blocked off the solenoid with the screw method, but does anyone tow ( or carry a lot of extra weight) since doing this mod?

I've also done this method, but most I've ever towed was some rubbish to the tip. Look forward to hearing more.

Also I noticed that before blocking, when failing a fine climb the turbo waste was very prominent. Well sounded like it. After the screw I don't notice it at all

Hey Wantsawillys, I also have the 02 2.5 CRD and have been having a similar issue over the last 18 months but only very randomly! It will cut out under acceleration as if you turned off the key, take your foot of the gas and will go again as if nothing happened until you get back up to the same rpm as when it cut out first time and MIGHT do it again. Then it will be faultless for another week or even a month. No codes. I have just learnt to live with it!!
Cheers
