Default Two differing opinions

Hi All,

After some feedback from the forum.

Had the 2014 built Diesel Laredo just over two weeks and 1700km. At about the 1200km mark a noise developed that sounded like a big end bearing being knackered. The noise is most prominent at light throttle and is very distinctive. On a heavy throttle from launch or when cruising at a constant speed it is not noticeable. Took it to the dealer the other day and got two differing opinions:

Opinion 1 The Head Mechanic: He drove it and had a listen and thinks it is a big end bearing.

Opinion 2 The Service Manager: He thinks it is something to do with the fuel pump. Basically asked to change diesel brands and see how it goes.

It is going in next week for a 'proper diagnosis'. Everyones thoughts?

Cheers,

Andrew

Don't know about either without being able to listen but I think there have been a couple of noisy pumps around. At any rate expecting you to change fuel brands and stick with something in particular to solve their problem is total crap. Shouldn't have to waste your time doing that. I would tell them you changed fuel brand and it is still the same. What would you do if you lived somewhere that didn't give you a convenient choice.

Change fuel, lol, lol, lol rubbish , unless you have some no name diesel but it wouldn't be the problem, if it was, you would know about it when you put the boot in. New vehicle surely could be pump or bolts not torqued.
As fester says tell em you changed fuel, BUT document date, times and who you spoke to and he said this and you said that, as well as try to get them to put it down on paper just in case you have any problems down the track.
A log of proceedings is handy and it doesn't hurt if they know either, Fair Trading like that sort of thing, service managers don't.

I'm with fester, here the service managers opinion is complete crap. I'd be inclined to believe the head mechanics opinion on failed big end bearing.

I'd be inclined to flog it a bit (as it is new and still in warranty) to see if this aggravates the problem.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

My initial thought on the Service Manager was to piss myself. In respect to changing fuel brand it was easy. I have a BP card and Caltex card for fuel. Changing to Caltex for the latest fill has done nothing. If anything the noise is getting worse and I can hear it whilst cruising at 110km/h.

Another symtom is that when the A/C is on fresh air mode, there is a pungent burnt oil smell coming through the cabin. I am not sure if this is related or just some of the coatings burning off exhaust etc.

In all honesty I hope it is the fuel pump. I couldn't imaging how long it would be off the road if they had to source a new engine (which they advised would be the case if it was a big end bearing). I really like the car and enjoy driving it.

The service manager does not deserve the job and has no idea
All fuel in Australia regardless of what brand it is at a service station is the same example in Qld in Brisbane we have only one refinery owned and operated by Caltex who sell and supply to all other brands
Regardlees of that BP is a good brand I think if you past these comments on to Bp they may a huge issue with the Jeep dealer and the Service Manager.
Yes there been some reported pump noise, but if the Mechanic thinks its big end then it mostlike to be that

Bloody hell that’s all you need when you’ve just got it! I can’t give you any thoughts on the noise (not very mechanically minded) just don’t get too disheartened.

When we went to pick up ours we were told it had a little puddle of oil under it when they moved it out of the showroom for the final clean-up before handing over. To cut a long story they had to replace the steering column (completely replaced) and although it didn’t feel good to have something like this happen at the very start, the car is fantastic to drive in all situations and hasn’t put a foot wrong in what is now 42,000kms. Let’s hope this problem is the only one you get.
