Default Stupid question oil pressure?

Hi I have not had oil pressure gauge for many years now working but not sure if correct at idle sits just above 1/2 when accelerating it climbs to near max when off gas drops back to normal pressure, is this normal I can not remember the gauge moving that much

That would be not normal for a diesel & probably not normal for a petrol.

I prefer to restrict my comments to things diesel.
What was the cause of the gauge not working?
It should idle low & build up with rev increase.
It is either the gauge (unlikely ) or the sender (likely).
If you replaced the sender to get it to work, it could be the wrong sender. If it just randomly started to work, it could be the sender on its last breath of life. Unlikely to be a bad connection but anything is possible.
Given it is about 1/2 at idle ~ that would be very good if correct, & builds while the engine RPM increases, it sounds like its giving an indication in the correct direction & that there may be some sort of calibration issue.
Hopefully some one who has a 4.0 & has had issues with their gauge in the past will tune in.

Thanks mate, your diagnosis is pretty close, glad I started this with Stupid Question

I had recently replaced the sender, was working fine and starts about half and creeps up a little when under power, this morning on way to work did as described above.

Solution - was the connector to the sender, the sender when it has no circuit cranks around to high, what was happening when under power the connector was vibrating and causing an open circuit which gave the appearance of high pressure when under power. Fixed connector and works as it should,

pretty sure I will have more stupid questions in the near future.

Thanks for your help
