Default Which petrol in a WJ 4.7L V8?

Howdy everyone,

I searched forum and google but I guess the keywords are too generic to find a thread with clear directions.

Question: which petrol should I put in the belly of my 2000 WJ 4.7L V8? Right now I'm using BP's unleaded 95 - but I have really no idea if there is a better choice. I've also put BP's 98 but I have read somewhere that it's better not to exaggerate with octanes.

BP is what I am using but it's just an example of course, feel free to suggest other brands.

If it runs okay on 95 then great, if not go to 98 depends how much you want to spend really..........won't go for the brand argument as it's BS.

I have done tests in my HO v8, between the BP 91, 95 & 98, with no significant differences, while the 98 appeared to allow it to idle smoother, thats all I could tell, it didn't get any more ltrs per k's thats for sure.

Also I am sure I read somewhere that the highest octane rating in the states for pump fuel is 91?

Quoting the states you would be talking MON not RON, MON fuel is rated lower but has more RON

I use 91 got over 600kms a tank on a long road trip recently

For the 8 years I had my WG I ran it on 95 initially then switched to 91 after 3 years. I noticed no difference in power or economy so remained with 91 until I sold it. I usually used Caltex and would indulge in a tank of premium if wheeling hard to prevent pinging, but that probably wasmy necessary.

I was told by a reliable source that American rating is different to ours and that their fuel is better. Their 87 is almost equivalent to our 98. Bloke that told me and his dad has been doing engines for a long time, over 60 years combined experience and is involved in all sorts of racing at Eastern Creek. Me? No clue..
