Default Long cranking time, again.

A few years ago I had the long cranking time issue that gone away with the installation of the spaces in the fuel pump. Exactly as per TSB. It has been allright ever since.

Now, the car developed the same issue. It does take some time of cranking for the engine to start (5-10 seconds). If restarted right away then no issues. It takes about 15-20 minutes post shut down to have an extended cranking to show its ugly face. I presume due the loss of fuel pressure in the rail.

Could this be that o-ring next to the spacer giving up?

Fuel pressure regulator was changed at the time of the previous repair.

I am planning to drop the tank and swap the fuel pump to a new aftermarket one all together. Any other places/things I should look at?

Thanks

Swap the entire module out. I had the extended cranking problem with my 2003 WG V8 and after swapping the module and fuel filter it was gone.

My missus has a 2002 WJ.
we went through the fuel leak down issue about 18 months ago.
Decided to replace the pump anyway - 190000 kms.
New pump arrived but the module didn't come with an O ring. The existing O ring didn't appear to seat properly at all, and then couldn't simply order a new one.
Went to a mate who is a fuel injection specialist and went through his O ring stock.
Found an O ring for an injector that was just slightly fatter than the original (assume old one would have been compressed).
Fitted new O ring using vasaline due to firm fit.
Not sure what spacer you are talking about (was 18 mths ago) but only replaced the O ring in the fuel pickup.
Hasn't missed a beat since.

ours had the same problem when we bought it, terrible fuel economy (even for mud tires), oddly after changing the oil it went away and fuel economy was excellent, but came back again all these months later.

sometimes hard to start from cold - 1/4 up on the temp gauge (around the block or to the servo) restart would fire up instantly. after running or driving at operating temp and stopping it would be hardest to start, then stumble and splutter and blow a heap of fuel out the exhaust.
The last owner even put a hi torque starter on because he was sick of it.

Looks like we will be in for the same fuel pump/ module replacement.

I suspect that if I'd replace the o-ring it would fix the issue. However, I ordered the new pump with the sending unit all together. This should be plug and play and hopefully fixes the issue. I will keep the old pump and see if I can find a fresh oring of the right size to replace.

Will be working on this tomorrow. Will try to snap a picture or two.

Sure enough the o-ring. You can actually see the deformation where it was letting out petrol and loosing pressure.

New pump gave me a heart attack when after I put it all together and added fuel it kept showing empty tank. I filled it up and it still showed empty. And then, as I was mentally preparing to drop the tank again, it suddenly came to life and now shows me a full tank. Hopefully, it will start moving as the fuel level goes down.

how hard is the job of removing the fuel tank and replacing the fuel pump? my jeep is starting this crap too. i have found that if i give it a quick hit with the key and then hit it again seems to evade long crank times. i think my battory is sick too and that is not helping.
