And some very expensive and well known companies are quite frankly a joke. If a winch company wants to exclude water damage it should be printed in big letters on the retail box and mentioned by the retailer.

It's quite possibly a violation of consumer law too.

Won't buy one on principle, bought a runva instead.

It was quite funny at the arb garage sale on Saturday. People are desperate to pay $1500 for a winch without rope or a solid state solenoid, second hand with no known history and no warranty.

Meanwhile a runva is about $650 delivered with iirc a 5 year warranty.

To be submersible waterproof it needs to be at least IP57.

So if a manufacture states IP57 they can not deny warranty due to water.

IP56 just means its hose proof.

Well some companies (warn, but I am sure there are others) will advertise with photos of their winches on vehicles completely covered in mud and in water. Yet come warranty time they pull the whole not warranted for water damage.

Might not explicitly state water resistance but it is certainly implied to any reasonable consumer.

Taking a lead from the ACL, if their promo material showed the winch underwater etc then they can not deny warranty if it was submerged.

Yeah exactly. Personally hasn't happened to me. When I was looking to purchase a winch a year ago there was a common theme of lots of people being denied warranty by warn and warn retailers such as arb.
