Default Tj diesel swap

Hi all

First post so bear with me.
I just bought a 97 TJ wrangler. It has had a lift done and is sitting on 33x12.5 rubbers. The only thing I don't like is the engine.
I prefer to have more of an expedition type set up. So my plan is to swap out the 4l bad boy for a more economic diesel. I'm thinking a 3l turbo such as Nissan ZD30 or a non turbo v6. But I'm unsure if there are better/easier conversions using other engines so if you know of any please let me know. I'm half thinking of putting the patrol drive train under the jeep because I can get a whole car for the price of the motor.

I'm going to come across as rude, so apologies, but for the price of what you want to do, maybe just buy a Patrol?

TJ with two Jerry cans or a long range tank will get you far enough, if you are looking at some serious wheel time to remote areas, a TJ is not for you.

You may as well put a TJ body on a Patrol.

Nissan zd30 is a bit old to bother with. It is seriously slow. Not to mention the whole grenading issue. There are much much better diesels available.

Any 3l diesel is going to be pretty heavy. Not sure how it will compare to original 4 litre.

Wiring is going to be a pain with any modern engine.

Is the engine bay wide enough?

Engine conversions are very expensive and labour is an absolute killer. The finished product is never worth what you put in if you try and sell it. For similar money buy a jk crd.

If you are set on a diesel tj you need to get a list of potential engines together.

What gearbox are you going to use? Consider available adaptors are their costs.

There is a company in the USA installing small modern diesels in older wranglers. I think they use Volkswagen engines?

I would be using a small 4 cylinder engine in a tj myself. They are relatively light and realistically not going to be used for heavy duty towing.

Do you have a budget in mind? A good engine and associated bits and pieces is going to be at a guess at least 6k. Plus any adaptors, engine mounts, engineering, labour etc etc.

A modern diesel into a tj will be a lot of work and money. Not trying to turn you off or saying it's a bad idea but be aware of this now. Only you can decide if the potential finished product can justify this.
