Default xj not going into 4th

Advice needed !!
My 95 xj sport has g/box issues almost from the time I brought it ? If I hit a bump in the road? Or accelerated hard?? It would go to 3rd and stay there !! Found that if I turned off the ign, and on again! It would almost act normal !! Till the next bump !!! ( drive a lot on the bruce hwy!! Bumps are not hard to find )
After many trips to different mec's ! Not fixed !! The advice was!! Another box !!!
Finaly got another from a wreck! And it was fitted !!
This one acts normal while it is cold!! Then goes back to 3rd and stays there !! Like its in recovery mode?? Can use it as a manual box from 1 to 3 !! But no 4th !!! Turning off dosent work either! !
Hair is getting less!! Pulling it out in clumps !!!
Must be something simple ??? Hopefully not expensive ???

Try taking the reverse lockout switch off the side of the auto box off pull apart and clean all the contacts inside .Easy job ,plus check worn selector rod bushes especially where they are attached to the floor pan.

Suggest you post this question on naxja.

Good luck with it.

Could be electrical, which would explain why changing the box didn't make a difference. From experience, it's hard to find a mechanic who can diagnose a problem - they usually just want to swap a part and get it out the door.

Here is a link about all the differences between transmissions, it seems 95 and 96 are the same.

Pre-update boxes are the same, early updates are also the same, AFAIK the later update models use an extra TSS that isn't required in the earlier model but still should be able to be used in an earlier model as the second TSS can be left disconnected, there may be differences in connectors but that'd be quite easy to rectify.....

Definitely sounds electrical to me....
