Default Slipping out of 4lo

So, had the family out for the school holidays on the border track, had a blast BTW, but the Kj seemed to slip out of 4wd mode when I was tackling a hill, meaning I had to reverse, re-engage and try again and sometimes even had to drive up pulling back on the lever...

Anyone know what's going on here?

You need to check the attachment of selector cable to the transfer case selector arm. There is a plastic bushing there which is known to fall out or break resulting in misalignment and possible slop. The cable assembly is not owner adjustable at the handle end so don't try that. If the cable is stretched or broken loose you have to change the whole cable assembly which includes the handle. Check the Service Manual for details - link to Service Manual is in the sticky thread at the front of the KJ forum.

Also check for bent or dented gearbox crossmember.
I came across quite a few cars with damaged undersides from rock sliding when looking at cars
which in the manuals was causing hard to select gears

Would this be the case in an auto?

best way, is look under the car to see if anything is bent. will be pretty obvious if the damage is there.
Glend is it cable or steel rod?

It's a push-pull cable.
