It's a great engine when properly maintained. My son has one in his JKU and I have it in my KJ. Good long range fuel economy on desert trips, never needed more than one reserve jerry can anywhere in the red centre. Massive torque, and if you put in a GDE tune It's gets even more impressive performance and fuel economy. I have seen 6.5L/100km on the run up from ST George to Emerald while heading to the Cape with full camping load (in my KJ), the JK will not be as good due to shape but my son has reported figures in the 8s and 9s on certain road trips in the outback. Obviously bigger tyres mean bigger, heavier wheels and tyres and increased frontal area which all impact fuel economy. Fancy bars qnd roof racks also affect ecnomy, and don't even think about a roof top tent unless you win the lottery.
